Three Ways to Forge Your Faith
Insights from The Weekly REBOOT
By: Bryan Flanery
Throughout history, some of the greatest victories have come not from overwhelming strength but from unshakable faith. David’s battle against Goliath is one of the most iconic examples of this. But how did David develop the kind of trust in God that led him to stand boldly against an enemy that terrified an entire army? How can you forge your faith? Here are three ways we can forge our faith like David:
1. Confidence in God, Not Circumstances
David didn’t rely on his own strength or experience to defeat Goliath—he relied on God. When he saw the giant mocking Israel’s army, his first reaction wasn’t fear but frustration that no one was standing up for God’s honor.
1 Samuel 17:32 – David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him."
David wasn’t arrogant or reckless. He had confidence because he had seen God’s power before. The same God who had helped him defeat lions and bears while protecting his flock would give him victory over Goliath. Our faith is forged when we choose to trust God in our own battles, even when circumstances seem overwhelming.
2. Trust Your Training
When Saul tried to outfit David with his royal armor, David quickly realized it wasn’t right for him. He had to rely on the tools and experiences God had already given him.
1 Samuel 17:39 – David said, "I cannot go in these, because I am not used to them." So he took them off.
David’s past experiences weren’t just random events—they were training grounds for his faith. Every trial he faced prepared him for a future victory. Likewise, the challenges we’ve endured have shaped us, even when we didn’t recognize it at the time. Instead of longing for different circumstances, we need to trust that God has already given us what we need for today’s battle.
3. Recognize That You’re Not Fighting Alone
David didn’t enter battle alone—God was with him. The same God who had been faithful in the past would be faithful again. Today, we have that same assurance.
Sometimes, we feel like lone warriors, facing our struggles by ourselves. But God surrounds us with a community, just as He surrounded David with people who eventually fought alongside him. When we engage in spiritual battles, we need to lean into the people God has placed in our lives—mentors, friends, and fellow believers who will stand with us.
Have Confidence--The Battle Is Already Won
David’s victory over Goliath wasn’t just about the fight—it was about faith. He didn’t step onto the battlefield because he was the strongest or most skilled warrior. He stepped forward because he knew the battle belonged to God.
Whatever challenge you’re facing today, know this: You have been prepared for this moment. God has equipped you, strengthened you, and placed people around you to support you. Just like David, you don’t need to rely on someone else’s armor—you already have everything you need in Christ.
So stand firm. The God who was with David is with you. And that’s more than enough.
