Growing Community: Lessons From Walking Together
Insights from The Weekly REBOOT
By: Jenny Owens
Today, we're exploring how Christian community serves as a vital source of instruction and guidance in our healing journeys. We’ll examine how shared experiences can educate and inspire us, demonstrating the transformative power of connection and support within our faith.
The Unique Approach of REBOOT
One defining feature of REBOOT is its peer-led structure. Unlike traditional models, REBOOT relies on a shoulder-to-shoulder approach, emphasizing the shared experiences of its participants rather than a doctor-patient dynamic. This egalitarian model fosters authentic connections and empowers participants to guide one another with life lessons that are often more impactful than what experts can deliver.
During our early days at Fort Campbell’s REBOOT Combat Recovery, we witnessed firsthand the transformation that can occur when community members instruct one another. An illustrative story from that period involves a group of soldiers and their families. Initially, many spouses, particularly wives, carried a palpable tension, frustrated by their partners and burdened by daily stresses. However, through shared stories and supportive conversation, understanding and grace began to flourish.
In one poignant moment, a wife who experienced frustration over her husband’s behavior learned from another spouse whose partner had a traumatic brain injury. This new perspective enabled her to extend grace and patience, shifting her view of her husband’s challenges from indifference to an injury-related struggle. Over time, this understanding led to profound personal growth and healing.
Jesus as the Ultimate Teacher
The foundation for our learning in community can be traced back to Jesus’ teachings. Jesus employed various methods to instruct his followers—through leading by example, offering direct instruction, and engaging in informal teaching.
- Teaching by Example: Jesus' life was a living lesson of humility and service. His act of washing the disciples’ feet is a powerful testament to servant leadership and true greatness.
- Direct Instruction: Jesus often delivered clear and direct teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount, to ensure his followers understood the essence of godly living.
- Informal Teaching: Through everyday interactions, like his conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus imparted wisdom in a relatable and accessible manner.
Embracing Community and Humility
Being part of a Christian community calls for openness to both giving and receiving instruction. It's about allowing others to speak into your life and being willing to share your wisdom. Healing requires humility; we need to acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers and be open to the guidance of others.
Consider past instances where advice challenged you. How did you respond, and what did you learn? Moreover, are you hesitating to share your own insights, doubting their value? Know that your journey through trauma has uniquely equipped you with discernment and wisdom that others may desperately need.
The Abundance of Counselors
Proverbs 11:14 teaches us the value of having a multitude of counselors. In a vibrant Christian community, we find safety and clarity through shared wisdom. Whether facing personal struggles, family issues, or spiritual questions, having a network of believers to turn to is invaluable.
As we go on from here, let's remember that we are stronger together. Engage with your community. Ask difficult questions. Share the lessons you've learned from your experiences. Together, we can navigate the complexities of life and emerge flourishing.
